Rambut Siwi Temple
Rambut Siwi Temple, known as Pura Luhur Rambut Siwi, is one of Bali’s most sacred sea temples in Jembrana Regency. As part of the revered Dang Kahyangan Jagat series of sacred temples believed to spiritually protect the island and, in some traditions, regarded as one of the world’s six holiest sanctuaries, it holds exceptional religious significance. Conveniently located along the main Denpasar-Gilimanuk road, the temple is a popular stop for travelers exploring western Bali. Beyond its spiritual importance, Rambut Siwi captivates visitors with its rugged coastal cliffs, lush tropical forests, opportunities to observe Hindu ceremonies, and breathtaking sunset views that rank among the finest in the region.
Rambut Siwi Temple is located in Yeh Embang Kangin Village, Mendoyo District, Jembrana Regency, on the western side of Bali. The temple sits on a clifftop slightly set back from the main highway, reached by a short path from the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road. Its position along this key route means many Hindu worshippers and road travelers stop here to pray for safety before continuing
Rambut Siwi Temple takes its name from the Balinese words rambut (hair) and siwi (worshipped), referring to the sacred strand of hair left by the revered Hindu priest Dang Hyang Dwijendra. As one of Bali’s largest temples and part of the Dang Kahyangan Jagat temple network, it honors the spiritual legacy of Dang Hyang Dwijendra and other revered Hindu teachers. Renowned for its serene atmosphere and dramatic ocean setting, the temple is a popular destination for meditation, worship, and enjoying the natural beauty of West Bali.
Rambut Siwi is part of a larger sacred network. Two additional temples stand close to the main complex. These are Pura Segara and Pura Penataran. During major ceremonies such as pujawali or piodalan, the three temples are visited in sequence because they represent a unified spiritual system.
Pura Segara, located closer to the shoreline, serves as a place to seek peace for the oceans. Pura Penataran stands beside it, completing the triad associated with the concept of Tri Loka which encompasses the sky, atmosphere, and earth. For the people of Jembrana, praying at all three temples is believed to maintain harmony in nature. Architectural details add depth to the experience. Red brick walls feature relief carvings depicting the Javanese epic Arjuna Wiwaha. Near the ocean side entrance stands a statue of Rangda, the fearsome guardian in Balinese mythology. At the lower level by the beach lies a sacred freshwater spring used for purification rituals.
The principal ceremony at Rambut Siwi Temple is observed every 210 days according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar, specifically on Buda Umanis of Wuku Prangbakat. When this sacred occasion coincides with either the full moon (Purnama) or the new moon (Tilem), it is celebrated as Odalan Nadi, the temple’s most important and spiritually revered festival. During these rare alignments, the temple welcomes large numbers of Balinese Hindu devotees from Jembrana and other parts of the island who gather to take part in the religious observances.
Visitors are required to wear a sarong and sash before entering the temple grounds. If you do not have your own, both items can be rented at the entrance for IDR 10,000. As a place of worship, modest attire that covers the shoulders and knees is expected, and guests are encouraged to behave respectfully and refrain from entering areas designated for religious ceremonies or active prayer.
Rambut Siwi Temple is one of the most important temples in West Bali, combining religious significance, cultural heritage, and beautiful coastal views in one destination. Whether you visit to learn about Balinese Hindu traditions, observe temple ceremonies, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings, the temple offers a rewarding experience. By following the dress code and respecting local customs, visitors can fully appreciate the unique atmosphere and importance of this sacred site.
