Tamba Waras Temple
Bali is home to many temples with unique histories and traditions. One is Tamba Waras Temple in Tabanan, on the southern slopes of Mount Batukaru in Sangketan Village, Penebel. Surrounded by forest and close to Batukaru Temple and Muncak Sari Temple, it takes around 35 minutes to reach from central Tabanan. It offers visitors a chance to experience Balinese Hindu traditions in a natural setting. The temple is also known for its melukat ritual, a traditional Balinese purification practice involving holy water.
Tamba Waras Temple was originally known as “Pancoran Sapta Pura Luhur Tamba Gangga.” The temple, also known locally as Tambo Waras or Tamba Waras, is associated with healing traditions, with “tamba” meaning medicine and “waras” referring to healing. According to local history, the site was used to store natural and herbal remedies and later became a place of worship dedicated to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi as a healing deity.
One of the temple’s most well-known stories dates back to the 12th century, during the reign of Cokorda Tabanan. When the king became seriously ill and no one could identify the cause, his servants prayed for guidance and received a mystical vision directing them into Batukaru Forest. There, they found smoke rising from burned coconuts and followed the vision's instructions by performing a ritual at the site. According to the legend, the forest guardian then appeared and revealed a cure for the king, which became part of the temple’s long-standing association with healing.
In Balinese tradition, health is closely connected to the balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Places such as Pura Luhur Tamba Waras reflect this belief, where prayer and spiritual rituals are part of seeking health and inner balance. Rather than focusing only on treating physical concerns, the tradition also emphasizes maintaining harmony within yourself and with the world around you.
The temple remains an active and respected place of local worship. Visitors must wear a sarong and sash, which are usually provided, and offerings are encouraged for those who want to participate more fully. The ritual flow is flexible, but visitors should observe and follow local customs before entering the water. Facilities are simple, keeping the focus on the traditional and spiritual experience.
Morning is generally the best time to visit, when the temple is less busy. Located in Sangeh Village, around 30–40 minutes from Ubud, it can easily be included in a day trip. Bring a sarong, towel, offerings, and a change of clothes if you plan to take part in the ritual. Visitors should dress modestly, keep noise to a minimum, and respect local customs. You can also combine your visit with a walk through the nearby forest or other cultural sites.
Several interesting places to visit surround Pura Luhur Tamba Waras, including natural attractions, temples, and scenic spots.
