Jemeluk Bay: Snorkeling and Diving for All Levels

Bali’s Best Shore Snorkeling Spot for Beginners

Jameluk Bay Underwater Temple

Jemeluk Bay is a diving site on the island’s east coast with diverse marine life and is one of the best snorkeling spots in Bali. Compared to some of Bali's more popular beaches, Jemeluk is much quieter, which is probably why many people come here to spend a few hours by the sea without doing much. You can go snorkeling or diving or take your time exploring the area. If you’re planning to visit, here’s how to get to Jemeluk Bay and what you can do once you’re there.

The Location

Jemeluk Beach and Bay is located in Amed, on the east coast of Bali. It sits at the eastern end of Amed Beach, with a cliff on one side that helps shelter the bay. From the beach, you can see the hills around Amed and, on a clear day, Mount Agung in the background. The bay is also easy to reach, just a short walk from the main road through Amed.

Things To Do At Jemeluk Bay

Jemeluk Bay is one of the easiest places in Amed to enjoy the sea, whether you come for snorkeling, diving, or want to spend a quiet day by the beach. Since Amed is quite a drive from the main tourist areas in South Bali, it makes more sense to stay for a couple of nights rather than visiting Jemeluk as a day trip.

Swim and Enjoy the Beach

Jemeluk Beach is a black-sand beach, typical of Bali’s volcanic east coast. It’s not a huge stretch of sand, but it’s a nice place to walk, swim, or sit down for a while. You’ll find small cafes along the beach where you can get a drink, rent a sun lounger, or sit and watch the water. There are usually very few waves, making it a good option for families with children. Even from the shallows, you can often spot small fish swimming around you.

Scuba Diving Certification

If you’ve always wanted to try scuba diving, Amed is a good place to start. There are plenty of dive schools in the area offering beginner courses, including the Open Water Diver certification. A basic certification lets you dive with a buddy to a maximum depth of around 18 meters, depending on the certification agency and course. If you’re already certified, you can also book guided dives to explore the reefs, drop-offs, and wrecks around Jemeluk Bay.

Go Snorkeling or Explore the Reef

One of the easiest things to do at Jemeluk Bay is walk into the water and start snorkeling. Masks, fins, and other basic equipment are available to rent from several places along the beachfront, so you don’t necessarily need to bring your own gear.

The reef starts quite close to shore, although conditions and visibility can vary. One of the areas worth exploring is the artificial reef known as the Pyramids, located on the left side of the bay. The concrete pyramid structures were placed underwater as part of reef restoration efforts and have attracted marine life. This area is particularly interesting for divers, with the reef extending down into deeper water and providing a different underwater environment from the shallower sections.

What Marine Life Can You See?

You don’t have to go very deep to find plenty of marine life around Jemeluk Bay. Spend some time exploring the reef, and you may come across moray eels, nudibranchs, anemonefish, turtles, giant clams, and various tropical reef fish.

Some of the more unusual species can be harder to spot and often require a slower approach and a good guide. Waspfish, for example, can sometimes be found around the artificial reef areas. If you enjoy looking for smaller creatures, Jemeluk is the kind of place where it pays to take your time rather than simply swimming from one spot to another.

Whether you’re snorkeling from the beach or joining a dive, remember to give the reef and marine life plenty of space. Avoid touching corals or animals, don’t take anything from the sea, and use reef-safe sunscreen to help reduce your impact on the area.

Best Time and Conditions for Diving

For the best conditions, plan your diving trip during the dry season, which generally runs from April to November. This is when the sea is often calmer, and visibility can reach around 15 to 25 meters, although conditions can change from day to day. The water stays warm throughout the year, usually around 26–29°C, so most divers are comfortable in a 3mm wetsuit. Diving is still possible during the rainy season, but visibility can be less predictable, especially after heavy rain when runoff can affect the water around the coast. If clear visibility is your priority, the dry season is generally the safer choice.

Conclusion

Jemeluk Bay is easy to fit into an Amed trip, especially if snorkeling or diving is on your list. The reef is close to shore, and you can see quite a lot without spending the whole day in the water.
